Saturday, headed over to my #1 locals go to and saw a Queen of the Wild (max bet 1.50) with a major at $455(must hit by $500) and the minor at $41(must hit by $50). I was playing close by and saw the woman was playing 30cents and 60 cents.. Twice, within an hour the woman went to the ATM. I left that area and 3 hours later, on my way out the door, saw she was still on the machine. This a.m. DH and I go to a brunch around 8:30.. She is STILL on the machine(has never left it all night according to a friend of mine who works there). Now, the major was at $468 and I forget what the minor was. My friend says the woman has said to various folks she has put in more than 1 thousand dollars! I have chased a progressive myself with disastrous results and vowed never to do it again and I haven't. The woman was already on the machine at 6:30 last night and as of 9:30 this morning was still on it with no breaks..Superwoman or supercrazy??
The latter, IMO. I guess we have all been caught up in chasing a bonus, but that's a bit too much.
DW
That is really chasing a bonus...she will be spending way too much to get the bonus if she can stay awake that long.
I try the majors in AC when I see them over the $475 but won't go to far and drop hundreds to maybe win.

Hi commanderbunbun:
There are different types of progressives. If that lady was on Player's Life, she would know that the MAJOR is driven up when the machine pays out. If the machien is not paying much out, it goes up slow.
Traditionally, a small portion of a player's bet is added to the progressive with each spin (it may just be a fraction of a set on a small bet). This is typically how IGT and Konami progressives work.
As a player, take note of how much you have to bet to move the progressive by a cent. Then, you can work out how much would have to be played in order to get the machine to the guaranteed payout. Then you can estimate the payback percentage, and calculately how much, on average, you would likely have to play to win the progressive. However, it is a random machine, and there are no "for sures".
If I found a game within $10 of a guaranteed jackpot (MAJOR ONLY)... personally, I would go for it ... armed with the knowledge I could still lose a $1000 or more trying for it. At some point, the risk becomes worthwhile ... and that risk is different for every player.

On top of that, most mega-progressive jackpots are paid out in the form of a 20-25 year annuity which really cuts the present value of the one-time award by about 50%. So in reality, the meter is not a true picture of the jackpot and neither is the meter scroll.

Good point! I know this is an area you are knowledgable in. Does getting the amount paid out as an annuity help with the taxes implications ... or make no difference.
If the recipient passes away, does the annuity still get paid out to the estate.

i had an experience with this. it was one of those konami games. with the indian chief that gets held in the bonus and you have to get 3 pi symbols to get 8 spins.
well the minor was at 49.20. and the lady had about 100 bucks on the machine, so i leaned over and asked her if she was playing for the progressive. she said yes. so i informed her that it goes up based on play so you may as well play the max, and maybe you will hit somethin.
surprisingly she did. and after about the 5th spin she triggers the bonus. first spin she gets 3 wilds locked. then retriggers. she got a couple more and won just over 1000 bucks. 2 spins later hits the minor. we talked through the bonus and she was going crazy.
she cashed out and i wished her luck and she did the same, and her and her husband walk away. i continued to play my game without much luck and about 5 mins later someone reaches over my shoulder and pops a bill into my machine. i turned like wtf!! it was that lady and she said heres a thank you for helpin me out.
she popped a 100 in. and i couldnt refuse it since it was already credited.
i dont know why but i did pay some of it forward. about a week later i was on jackpot deluxe and hit a great bonus and won about 800 on it, it was after midnight and on a weekday and this little old lady was playin next to me and talked and was super friendly. she was min bettin, i cashed out my ticket and put it into my wallet and took out a fifty and popped it in her machine.
she was speechless that a younger guy was so generous. i felt good about doing it and wished her well. she thanked me over and over. and i walked to my next machine and hit a big bonus on that one quickly.
The problem with betting the minimum amount to win the progressives on slots like Queen of the Wild or Kronos is due to how the progressive increases in value and pays out. The progressive only increases in value based upon the amount of money won on winning spins. Progressive increases 0.01$ for every 2.00 win. A 40 cent bet would require a big slot win (multiple of bet) to increase the progressive a small amount, while a maximum bet of 2.00$ would increase the progressive with almost every win. The bigger the slot win money wise, the more likely that the progressive will pay out. A 40 cent bet would require a massive win to get a 50$ win, but a 2.00$ could get a 50$ win easier. Larger bets would have a better chance of winning the progressive than minimum bets.
The Progressives on Super Team work differently. They increase on every dollar bet, instead of dollars won. This means that even if the machine isn't paying, the progressive will continue to increase. Payout is random, just like the hero bonuses.

Hi jasonriordan:
In some ways ... it's the worst thing that could happen. We both know the max bet did not help her get the bonus. However, I'm not sure that she knows that -- and it appears that action resulted in a positive consequence. Now you are corrupting other players. ha ha. ![]()
