The most customizable slot adventure in history is ready to take flight, so we sat down with the creative mind behind Super Team® slots to get a behind-the-scenes look at a game he says is over 15 years in the making.
The Super Team slot seems to be a very large slot game – how many total bonus and feature rounds exist?
It seems like a lot, but there are just two parts of Super Team: Heroes and Bonus Games. Heroes do special things to the reels, like adding wilds in different ways, giving multipliers, or even awarding progressives. Bonus Games play out full special bonuses with your Personal Hero as the star. There are three different Bonus Games, and 15 different Heroes, and they all combine in a lot of different ways. So in one way there are two things that happen, and in another, there are thousands.
How long did you work on Super Team slots?
Believe it or not, we’ve been working on Super Team for about fifteen years. We always loved the idea of dynamically generated power-ups for better wins, but the game logic was more than the technology could handle. The new [CPU-NXT®3] motherboard and video card let us finally make Super Team the way we wanted to. When we got that, we knew it was time for Super Team to finally put on its cape and fly.
How many people total were involved with Super Team slots?
Would you believe ninety-nine? I can hardly believe it myself. But between all the painters, riggers, animators, mathematicians, engineers, sign builders, musicians, play testers, business people, suit-stitchers, cape wranglers, mad scientists, and super villains, we get to ninety-nine. Add the guy who puts the light on top of the cabinet, and it’s an even hundred.
This reminds me of playing a cartoon – is this game aimed at a younger generation of players, or do you expect this to be just as popular with more “mature” players?
I think both older and younger players will relate to the idea of a powerful friend who can rescue you from a bad spin. For us, these costumed heroes use their powers for spinning up great wins. I’ve often wished someone would just fly down out of the sky and give me a progressive. Well, now Mr. Maximum is here to do just that.
It’s funny, but I don’t think of heroes as just for kids. Many comic heroes are in their 70s at this point, and have been around as long as the Social Security they’re collecting.
What is your favorite bonus in the game?
I like that you can pick which unlocked bonus round you want to play, because our bonus rounds are quite different! The Fortress Bonus gives your hero half a minute to fly through an enemy fortress. Your hero flies through guns while being awarded credit prizes, more time and speedups, and you can use the game buttons to steer up and down.
Or people might prefer the Robot Fight Free Spins. On every win in this bonus, your Personal Hero attacks the robot. Destroy a robot for a prize, AND the free spins keep going as another robot appears! They’ll go on as long as your hero keeps defeating those robots. The heroes Expanda and The Big Punch appear in this bonus… when they appear together, you can really get some good wins going.
How often can players expect to see a feature trigger?
As a player, you get to decide the relative frequency of heroes. We have the heroes divided into two teams, and you pick the one you’d like to play with. Team Emerald comes down more often on average than Team Ruby, but Team Ruby pays larger amounts on average than Team Emerald. (Now that’s an average… some lucky player could get Team Ruby coming down lots and lots, and some other lucky player could have a really big win on Team Emerald. Math! Go figure.)
Do you have a favorite hero?
Now, now. You are ALL my favorites. But I think no one who sees Bubble Girl in action will be disappointed.
What is the top award players can win on Super Team slots with minimum bet?
Minimum bet on Super Team is 40 credits, and makes you eligible for the Super Team Progressive Jackpot. That starts at $100.00 and grows until someone wins it. Of course, with the right combination of heroes (let’s say the Math Scientist, Bubble Girl and Dr. Rewind) you could have a chance at winning much more than that.
What was the biggest challenge in designing this game?
The biggest challenge in designing Super Team was in letting go some of the really cool ideas we had because the game just got too huge. We could have been working on it for another twelve years if we’d wanted to. Sigh. If Super Team turns out to be popular enough with players, though, maybe we can get them in Super Team II.
Did you develop character histories for the hero characters in the game?
We did! Long, involved background stories, with aliens and mystical amulets and space radiation, crossover continuity and everything. One idea we had to cut was running comics showing these stories on the top of the screen, with one panel going by every spin. Unfortunately, it was becoming way, way too nerdy, so we decided to remove the backstories from the game. But who knows? Maybe one day those stories will make it into another game down the road.
What are “Hero Points” and how do players earn them?
After each bonus round, you get a Hero Point. It’s that easy. The tricky part is saving them… to save them, you have to sign into Player’s Life® web services. If you already have an account from playing THE LORD OF THE RINGS™ or CLUE™ games, you can use the same one in Super Team.
If you don’t sign in, you can still get all the heroes and two of the three bonuses. You just don’t get to save the trophies, Hero Points or the Personal Hero costumes.
The trailer for the game showed a player having both trophies and Hero Points. How many trophies are there in the game, and how can players win them?
Most of the trophies are won in the casino. We award them for certain wins with different heroes, good bonuses and things like that. A couple are skill-related… for getting through our Fortress Bonus without hitting the walls or getting hit by a missile.
There’s also a trophy for online play. If you get the online trophy playing the mini-game, you unlock the super disco outfit for your Personal Hero. They look pretty cool fighting robots and catching burglars in that. All told, there are more than 40 trophies you can win, which are tracked by your Player’s Life account and can be viewed both at the slot machine and online.
How does the personal hero customization work? How many possible combinations are there?
At any time before or after a spin, you can touch your Personal Hero’s picture on the bottom of the screen and change what they’re wearing, the color of their skin, change hairstyles… you can even make them fly around in their underwear. If you log in and save your Hero Points, you get to unlock even more costume pieces and more colors. All told, there are well over a million combinations.
Do you have a favorite hero “look” you can share with us?
My favorite combinations… well, we have a program we use to test the games that just randomly touches everywhere on the screen. Somehow, those random touches always came up with the coolest, most unpredictable costumes. So go ahead, close your eyes, and start slapping the screen. You never know what you’ll come up with.
What is your favorite part of the game?
I love that you can dress up your own hero, and then they play in the bonus rounds for you. It’s silly, I know, but it makes me feel closer to the win. I’m hoping people will feel the same way and post videos of big wins with their heroes on right here on PlayersLife.com for everyone to enjoy.

View ProfileThis game ROCKS! I have played it 3 times at Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City and plan on playing it again. Hopefully there will indeed be a Super Team II with those cut characters. My own nerdy side would love to hear those background stories on all the heroes, too!
I do find it hard to believe that you have been working on Super Team for 15 years and have had 100 people involved in the process, but in my opinion, it was well worth it!

View ProfileHi going4broke,
I'm glad you like it! We like it too.
Also, I may have slightly exaggerated the number of Mad Scientists and Cape Wranglers. Forgive me. Enthusiasm sometimes gets the best of me.

View ProfileHi lord_heavy27,
You're welcome! We're glad you appreciate games like these. I don't believe Super Team will be in Oregon anytime soon, so you'll probably get your first chance in Vegas.
By the way, are you any relation to lord_heavy26? We went to high school together.

View ProfileGames like "Clue", "Super Team" and "Lord of the Rings" have a lot more depth than traditional slot machines. For a player like this -- this is EXACTLY what I want. A game that I love to play, with plenty of variation, and a chance to see something new happen each visit.
These games must take a lot of time and money (resources). Players seem to be more "fickle" than they used to be. They sit at a new machine, give it $20 worth of play ... and if is doesn't do something ... that's the last test.
How do you think playing habits have changed over the past ten years? With all of your work, do you worry that a game with so much to offer will get the old $20 buck tryout ... or the old, "that game doesn't pay"?
I absolutely love the idea of back stories for characters ... information the player will never know about the characters ... but "idea DNA" that went into creating how they look and act. Did you enjoy comics as a kid?
Can you tell us a little about the charcters? What are some of the really big events that players can hope for to get a really amazing win?? Which characters are your favorites? Does Mr. Maximum have the higher potential for payout? Which character gives the most "reliable" payouts?
Thanks very much to WMS for posting these great "behind the scenes" interviews!

View ProfileBubble Girl is one I would like to see in action! She is not in the little "frame" with the other heroes on the top screen, I just thought that she was filling space....well one day I hope to meet her and the other heroes.

View ProfileWow, I am very excited to play this game when it comes to oregon casinos. I know about the programming and how much is involved. I'm a tech person and have been in the computer field for over twenty years and have done alot of programming with various languages. Great job on the animation and allowing your players to create your own hero.
thanks

View ProfileI played this game for the 1st time the other day and I enjoyed it. Will play it again when I get the chance.
I have a question...in the Fortress Bonus, wouldn't it have been better if the controls were setup different? There's 2 rows of buttons on the machines, one to specify number of lines, and the other your bet multiplier. It seems to me that the top rows could all be "Fly Up" buttons and the bottom row all "Fly Down" buttons. Holding these buttons would move the hero in that direction. The hero would fly straight if no button is held. Seems more intuitive to me that way.

View ProfileI think you all did a great job with the machine. It is pretty neat when you hear the Super Team alert and the anticipation of which will drop is exciting. I see lots of potential with this one.

View ProfileIt's just really amazing how much work goes into these games and how many hands come into play in order for all this to actually happen. Great job guys, keep it up.

View ProfileI love this game and have won big playing a .40 bet. I got Bubble Girl and she turned all my squares wild except the bottom right. Ended up with $225. That REALLY increased my "like it" score for this game. Thanks for all the hard work that you put into this game and for waiting until the right software was available. It must be hard to have an idea and have to choose between just getting it out there and waiting to get it out until it was what you imagined. I, too, think that the Fortress bonus is too confusing. I know that you don't HAVE to do anything when you play it, but I like the interactive aspect and try. However, I don't think that quickly and it's hard to remember to push or not push or hold. When I choose it, I usually get frustrated and just let my Hero crash into wall after wall.

View ProfileI love active games and Super Heros looks great but Shamus is right if you don't get some play out of $20 it won't be as fun. It's such a shame that ya'll put so much work into creating a fun game and then it's taken out. There are alot of games I truly injoyed playing and the next thing you know their gone.LOTR example. The first couple times I played Clue things happened and it was fun. Now you play and go 10 spins and nothing so no one is playing. Please keep the games active We'll probably still return all winings. Harrahs in Shreveport and Tunica still don't have Super Heros. Which casinos in Vegas will have it?

View ProfileI love this game! I played it at MGM Detroit. The only observation I noticed is there is long periods of time when your super heros are shy but then all of a sudden then all start coming out to help you win more. I love when multiple heros help you out! Keep up the great work.
